Digging into Diversity with PRSSA National Vice President of External Affairs, Andrew Young

By Emily Zekonis

This month, WVU PRSSA, and WVU as a whole, took a look at diversity in the field of public relations and on campus. With workshops led by Brett White and a week of activities dedicated to making a more inclusive community, led by the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the word “diversity” has been on top of everyone’s mind- but what really is diversity?

“Diversity is all about the inclusion of every person, no matter what makes them different or stand out,” said Andrew Young, PRSSA National Vice President of External Affairs.

As Vice President of Advocacy, one of Andrew’s main responsibilities is to head PRSSA’s National Diversity Initiative and help chapters promote diversity on their campus.

“Chapters should look at the composition of their university,” said Young, explaining how chapters should aim to reflect their university's diversity breakdown. “It should be a priority for PRSSA to encourage diversity”

As communicators, each day we work with individuals of all backgrounds, whether it be our coworkers, client or audience. Recognizing individuals unique characteristics can help create better campaigns, reach a broader audience and build relationships that will support our goals.

“We are all, at our base, the same,” said Young. “We have things that make us different, but these things make us better.”

PRSSA National has taken strides in creating diversity across the organization with the development of international chapters, located in Argentina, Peru and Columbia. Andrew Young works directly with these locations to increase the resources for rising PR professionals outside the U.S.

PRSSA National and the parent organization, PRSA, offer a variety of tools that Young suggests chapters utilize to the conversation about diversity.

“I’m not here to speak into the bullhorn, but to hold it for others to talk,” said Young. “I can’t tell you what it’s like being from other backgrounds, but I am here to invite those people to the table and listen to them.”
