Committee Involvement: Why Should I Join?

Looking to build your resume? Want to add unique campaign materials to your portfolio? Ready to put what you’re learning in class into action? Want to network and make friends in the field of public relations? Well, this is the blog for you! There are many ways to get involved in the PRSSA chapter, but the best way to gain PR experience and hone particular skills is by joining one of our many committees. These committees range from a fundraising event committee to an advocacy and awareness campaign committee. Joining one, or more, of these committees gives members the opportunity to broaden their portfolio of work, boost their resumes, network among peers, and learn more about the public relations field and what it entails.

Learn more about the variety of committee options below!

Seafood Nutrition Partnership Campaign Committee- Brittany Osteen (bnosteen@mix.wvu.edu)

The Seafood Nutrition Partnership is a national campaign that encourages people to eat seafood twice a week per the USDA/FDA dietary guidelines. Did you know that the benefits of eating more seafood include a lowered risk of chronic diseases like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes? Brittany didn’t either before she started volunteering for this initiative. The goals are to garner media coverage and secure new pledges to eat more seafood. Our next event is the Healthy Heart Walk on Oct. 21.

Fundraising Committee- Emily Zekonis (ez0005@mix.wvu.edu)

The fundraising committee works as a team to brainstorm and execute unique fundraising initiatives to benefit the WVU PRSSA chapter. This year’s efforts will focus on allowing students to participate in an experience to build their resume. Emily’s goals are to increase chapter visibility while raising money to assist with costly conference and travel expenses in the future. Students looking to get involved should have an interest in event planning and campaign PR skills.

Community Service Committee- Lexi Farmer (akfarmer@mix.wvu.edu)

The community service committee works together to solve community issues by applying public relations skill sets and knowledge. The benefactors range from local non-profits to national initiatives. Lexi has planned that this fall the committee will focus on collaboration with the local Rosenbaum house and aiding our fellow Houston PRSSA chapter in this time of need. In the spring, we will transition to continuing relief in southern West Virginia and fostering relationships with other Morgantown organizations.

PR Committee- Maya Tretheway (mctretheway@mix.wvu.edu)

The PR Committee will work towards planning our second annual “Let’s Eat” fundraising event for the Morgantown Boys & Girls Club which will take place on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. Let’s Eat will be an international food tasting featuring numerous different cultural student organizations on WVU’s campus. In preparation for this event, we will be breaking down the PR Committee to focus on some main tactics that will need to be completed. Maya will be focusing on getting the word out about Let’s Eat by narrowing the PR Committee into five subcommittees: planning, media relations, promotions, sales and setup/breakdown.

Joining a committee can not only lead to success in the PRSSA chapter, but also lead to personal growth within the member themself. Committees build teamwork and leadership skills individually and as a whole chapter.
